S & C Electric Company - Advanced Technology Center
Chicago, Illinois

Hill Mechanical was selected to design and build the HVAC, plumbing, process piping and industrial ventilation systems for the 41,750 square foot Advanced Technology Center (ATC) on S&C Electric Company's Chicago campus. The ATC will house two large very high voltage generators for testing switchgear and electrical isolators. The project includes: -A 50-ton packaged VAV roof mounted air conditioning unit ducted to 15 fan powered and standard VAV boxes with electric heat -A 40,000 CFM custom heat reclaim penthouse air handling unit incorporating a "heat pipe" refrigerant heat transfer coil -Multiple two-way and four-way ventilation/exhaust fans -Two 42,000 CFM custom manufactured centrifugal fans capable of developing 20 inches of static pressure water column (W.C.) at design air flow for cooling the stators of the two generators -Welded carbon steel ductwork pressure rated at 24 inches W.C. -A 500-ton cooling tower along with associated pumps all piped to multiple 12 row cooling coils mounted in the welded carbon steel ductwork -Lube oil and compressed air piping -12 exhaust fans with ductwork -Heating and cooling ceiling mounted radiant panels served by existing chilled water and hot water systems in an adjacent building -DDC temperature control system Architect: A.C.
