O'Hare International Airport
Chicago, IL

At Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, airport operations, security and safety are of the utmost importance. Hill Mechanical Corporation is the prime (all trades) contractor for complete removal and replacement of the original Terminals' HVAC systems (installed in 1961). Key project requirements include no HVAC system downtimes during changeovers, thus requiring an extensive temporary HVAC system installed on the penthouse roof.

The primary scope of work includes replacing forty-four air handling units with forty-two new custom air handling units. The air handling units' respective mechanical and ventilation systems are replaced almost in their entirety. Ancillary support systems including electrical, temperature controls and plumbing are also replaced. An entirely new pre-action fire protection system has been added as well. General trades work stuctural steel temporary skeletal support frame (covering 25,000 sq. ft.), concrete, masonry and finishes.

Total permanent HVAC system capacity includes 929,000 CFM conditioned air, 921,000 CFM Exhaust/Return Air and the equivalent of 3500 tons (cooling) and 800 boiler-horsepower (heating). The temporary HVAC system capacity includes 108,000 CFM conditioned air, 181,000 CFM Exhaust/Return Air and the equivalent of 450 tons (cooling) and 150 boiler-horsepower (heating).
