Level 3 Communication

Hill Mechanical Corp. has been selected as the mechanical (mechanical, ventilation + plumbing) contractor for the build-out of the Level (3) Communications space at the E Port data center/telecommunications facility in the former Montgomery Wards Catalog Warehouse in the River North area of Chicago. Level (3) Communications has leased 164,000 sq. ft. of space in the facility, over 142,000 sq.ft. of which is raised-floor data center space for web hosting, telecommunications, etc. The scope of work includes the mechanical and support systems that provide over 3,200 tons of cooling from 107-thirty ton chilled water computer room air-conditioning units. Primary cooling is supplied from Unicomís chilled water systems (Unicom Thermal Technologies/Plant No. 4 is the primary provider. This chilled water plant was designed and built by the Hill Mechanical Corp. and completed in 2000). A 100 percent redundant mechanical system, consisting of eight- 400 ton air cooled chillers, has been provided on the roof and interconnected to the primary system utilizing plate and frame heat exchangers. Additionally, seven-2000 kW fuel oil fired emergency generators have been provided to serve as a back-up power source for the data center equipment. The generator exhaust, generator cooling and fuel oil systems are also provided by the Hill team.
